Special Access vs. Accommodation

When teaching a course, you may have students who require a need for accommodation, or simply need some flexibility in completing assessments. You can accommodate those students in your Brightspace course site in two ways.

If one or more students in your course require an alternate or extra time to complete a particular assignment, quiz, or survey, you can grant it to them using the Special Access function discussed here.

If a student requires extra time for every quiz in your course, you can set up a semester-long accommodation for that student.

How to Set Up a Time Accommodation

  1. From the navbar on the course homepage, go to Communications and select Classlist from the drop-down menu.
  2. Find the name of the student needing the accommodation.
  3. Click on the dropdown arrow next to the student’s name and select Edit Accommodations from the menu.
  4. There are two ways to modify quiz time for the student based on the nature of the accommodation:
    1. If there is a set time allotment identified in the accommodation request, use the Multiplier of original quiz time. This allows you to multiply the standard time allotted for the assessment by the number recommended in the accommodation (e. g. if a student’s accommodation is time and a half to complete a quiz, enter 1.5 as the multiplier).
    2. If the accommodation is the assignment of extra time, then the Extra time option allows you to add the exact number of additional minutes needed.
  5. Click Save.

How to Enable Right-Click

  1. A number of assistive technologies require users to have access to right-clicking; however, many instructors disable this function in Brightspace quizzes to prevent students from copying & pasting during the quiz.
  2. To ensure right-clicking is available to students who need it:
    1. From the navbar on the course homepage, go to Communications and select Classlist from the drop-down menu.
    2. Find the name of the student needing the accommodation
    3. Click on the dropdown arrow next to the student’s name and select Edit Accommodations.
    4. In the pop-up window, select Always Allow Right Click.
    5. Click Save.
NOTE: Special access settings override Accommodations settings. That is, if you set up accommodations for a student and then give that student special access to a quiz, the special access settings will trump the accommodation.
