Options for Recording Lectures

If you are looking for a highly supported approach, CITL’s specialized Classroom Studio may be your best option. Using familiar classroom technology, a CITL video production expert will record your lectures and upload them to CITL’s Video Uploading and Hosting server. You can then embed your videos into your Brightspace course site.

CITL also offers Lecture Capture technology for recording of in-person lectures using specialized classrooms across campus. Lecture Capture records a small video image of the instructor, the instructor’s voice, and all information projected through the data projector. Links to recordings created using Lecture Capture automatically show up in your Brightspace course site.

Online Rooms is an easy tool for recording lectures and sharing them with students – all within Brightspace. Because Online Rooms is fully integrated with Brightspace, there is no need for external tools or software to make your recordings, and there are no video files to manage. Once you record a lecture in the Online Rooms, a URL link is generated for the recording, so you can easily copy and share it in your Brightspace course site.

Memorial University has acquired an enterprise Webex license that is available to all instructors and staff at Memorial. While Webex is traditionally viewed as a synchronous meeting or teaching platform, it can also be used for lecture recording.

Using your Personal Room, you can launch a Webex session, configure your environment, and record your session using the built-in tools within Webex (audio, webcam, screen sharing). A transcript can be automatically generated for your file.

The resulting video file can be saved to the Webex cloud, and A URL link along with a password will be generated for your recording. You can then share the link and password with students in your Brightspace course. Alternatively, you can save the video file to your computer for further editing with your own editing software.

ScreenPal is a screen recording software that allows instructors to easily record content from their computer as well as their audio, and optionally video. Memorial has procured a limited amount of ScreenPal licenses that can be used by instructors for creating content for their courses.

ScreenPal includes annotation tools, a video editor, and special effects that can be used to make your videos more dynamic. ScreenPal can also generate transcripts of your video using Google’s speech-to-text engine, and you have the ability to edit the transcripts for accuracy. You can publish these as open or closed captions for your video file.

While Microsoft PowerPoint is primarily designed to create presentations, it can allow you to add audio/video narration to your slides as well as screen recordings from your desktop or an application, and you can then export this finished presentation as a video. This is an easy path for content creation if the bulk of your lectures already have PowerPoint presentations as a visual aid.

Logitech Capture is an all-in-one content software solution that supports multiple cameras and the ability to record your desktop or an application, and studio-like controls such as streaming options, live text overlays and camera customization. Since a major portion of its workflow revolves around live streaming, it is designed for you to do all of your content creation, source switching and effects in real time without the need to edit after the fact.

If you are using a MacOS computer such as an iMac or Macbook, you can record your screen with the built-in Quicktime Player. This will allow you to record your screen and narrate with your microphone without any additional software.
