Exploring COIL: Building Global Classrooms Through Online Collaboration (CITL Instructor Series)
October 21 @ 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
The presenters for this session are Dr. Sonja Knutson, Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Education, & Ilgin Aksoy, COIL Coordinator, Internationalization Office
Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) offers instructors a powerful model for embedding global learning into existing courses without the need for travel. In this session, Ilgin Aksoy, COIL Coordinator at Memorial’s Internationalization Office, and Dr. Sonja Knutson, Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Education, will introduce the fundamentals of COIL and share their experiences supporting and initiating international collaborations across disciplines.
The session will feature insights from Dr. Chinelo Ezenwa, Assistant Professor in the Department of English, who is currently implementing a COIL partnership with the Fluminense Federal University, offering a practical perspective on how COIL can enhance student engagement, foster intercultural awareness, and support instructional innovation. The session will also address how to initiate and manage collaborations with international partners, strategies for co-developing course curricula, and best practices for navigating the collaborative process. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how to begin their own COIL projects and how to access the support available through the Internationalization Office.
This is a hybrid session (offered online and in-person) and it will be recorded.
