Making Room for Transferable Skills in Courses (CITL Instructor Series)
October 7 @ 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
The presenters for this session are Dr. Suzanne Dufour Professor, Dept of Biology, Faculty of Science & Ian Gibson, FUSION Coordinator, CITL.
During the course of their academic degrees, students will acquire and develop a handful of different skills which are almost never taught to them explicitly—the ability to collaborate, for instance, or the ability to adapt quickly to unfamiliar circumstances. So often we educators take these skills for granted, and when we do think of them, we presume that they are ancillary to the “actual” content of our courses.
In this presentation, we will consider what it might look like to give these skills their due, as well as how we might make room for students to develop and reflect upon them in our classes. This will involve looking at a case study on the implementation of a skill-development module in an academic class.
This is a hybrid session (offered online and in-person) and it will be recorded.
If attending online, it is recommended that you attend this session using one of the following internet browsers: Chrome, Microsoft Edge (Chromium) or Firefox. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time.
