Change to Brightspace Grade Behaviour

Change to Brightspace Grade Behaviour

What happened?

A recent update to Brightspace has changed how grades are stored and released to students in your course and this is affecting what appears for students.  Final exam or final assignment grades may be unknowingly released to students due to this change.

What can I do?

If you would like to prevent students from seeing a particular assessment that makes up their grade, and you have already hidden the grade column, you can simply change the Assignment folder or Quiz availability settings. To hide a Quiz or Assignment folder:
1) Go to the tool;
2) On the drop down menu available next to the title of the quiz or folder select “Edit”;
3) On the “Restrictions tab” check “Hide from Users”.

You can change this setting once all submissions have been received for your assignment, quiz, or online proctored assessment and before you begin grading.

Why did this happen?

Brightspace recently corrected a problem in their platform that prevented grades from being synced between the Quiz tool and the Assignments tool and the Gradebook.  If a grade was entered into the Quiz or Assignment tool, grades would sync into the Gradebook but if grades were entered directly into the Gradebook, they would not sync to the tool, and would need to be re-entered.  The change in the platform enables two-way syncing.

Memorial’s policy around grading is that final grades are released to students via the Registrar’s Office once approved by academic departments.  CITL has often recommended that instructors hide a single column from view (usually the final exam or final assignment column) for their students in addition to hiding the Final Grade column.  Now that two-way syncing is enabled, instructors must take the additional step of disabling visibility of the assessment once complete, or when grades are entered, they will sync to the tool and appear for students to review.

Please reach out to the CITL Support Centre if you need help or have any questions about this change.
