Undergraduate student reading has often been described as a “don’t, won’t, can’t” problem (Horning, 2013, p. 1). Despite these problems, it can be difficult for course instructors to support students’ development into strong critical readers because, unlike problems with writing, we do not often “see” problems with reading.

This session will introduce course instructors to social annotation, a process whereby students collaboratively annotate or “mark up” assigned readings. In the session, Melanie will describe how she implemented social annotation into her first-year critical reading and writing (CRW) course. Participants will learn what social annotation is, how it compares to other reading assessments, and how it can support students’ reading and writing development.
