class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating a Classic Activity: Steps<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>For a Classic activity, the instructor assigns one assignment to all students and the students complete a draft version of the assignment. Each student, working individually, completes the <em>create, assess<\/em>, and <em>reflect <\/em>phases of the assignment in peerScholar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"note\">\n<h4>Note<\/h4>\n<p>The design of peerScholar makes it easy to set up a Classic activity. This resource will be an additional guide starting with the initial setup in Brightspace.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Create a Link from Brightspace to the peerActivity in peerScholar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>peerScholar is fully integrated with your Brightspace course. Creating a link to peerScholar in the course will allow instructors to create an associated activity. When instructors click the link, they will launch peerScholar and they can create, edit, or manage the associated activity. When students click the link, they will launch peerScholar and the associated activity will appear allowing them to complete the current\/open phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Option 1<\/strong>: Create link in the table of contents<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Open the module where you want the link to appear<\/li><li>Click the <strong>Existing Activities<\/strong> dropdown menu and select <strong>External Learning Tools<\/strong><\/li><li>Click <strong>peerScholar<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/technologyresources\/files\/2019\/11\/peerScholar-ExistingActivities-1.png\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is peerScholar-ExistingActivities-1.png\" width=\"181\" height=\"325\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/technologyresources\/files\/2019\/11\/InsertQuicklink.png\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is InsertQuicklink.png\" width=\"181\" height=\"67\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Option 2<\/strong>: Create a link on a content page<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Highlight the text you want for the link<\/li><li>Click the <strong>Insert Quicklink<\/strong> icon in the tools menu<\/li><li>Click <strong>External Learning Tools<\/strong><\/li><li>Click <strong>peerScholar<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/technologyresources\/files\/2019\/11\/peerScholar-InsertQuicklink.png\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is peerScholar-InsertQuicklink.png\" width=\"351\" height=\"378\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Build the activity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Launch the peerScholar activity by clicking on the peerScholar link in Brightspace (see options 1 and 2 above)<\/li><li>Set up the activity in peerScholar<ol><li>Choose <strong>New Activity<\/strong> on the left\u00a0<\/li><li>Choose <strong>Classic<\/strong><\/li><li>Click <strong>Create Activity<\/strong><\/li><li>Expand the <strong>Classic Activity<\/strong> section and enter a name for your peer review assignment<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>Configure the <em>Create <\/em>phase of the activity<ol><li>Add instructions that students will need to complete this phase<\/li><li>Attach required resources<ul><li>Appropriate resources may include a rubric, a sample assignment, or a demo video<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>Configure the <em>Assess <\/em>phase of the activity<ol><li>Choose the number of peer assignments that each student will have to assess<ul><li>This will also be the number of peer assessments that the students will receive<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Build the assessments that students will use as they review, assess, and provide feedback to each of their peers \u2013 add and create one or more assessments<\/li><li>Turn <strong>Self-Assessment<\/strong> on or off as required<ul><li>Choose to use the peer assessments that you created or add and create assessments specifically for self-assessment purposes<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Add\/edit the <strong>Assess Instructions<\/strong> that students will need to complete this phase<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>Configure the <em>Reflect <\/em>phase of the activity<ol><li>Turn <strong>Revise and Submit<\/strong> on or off as required<\/li><li>Turn <strong>Assess the Feedback<\/strong> on or off as required<ul><li>A feedback assessment is available for students to use when assessing the feedback that their peers provided (this can be edited or deleted)<\/li><li>Add and create additional feedback assessments as needed\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Add\/edit the <strong>Reflect Instructions<\/strong> that students will need to complete this phase<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>Click <strong>Continue <\/strong>to complete this section <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Set the dates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two options for scheduling the phases of peer review in peerScholar:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Manually control due dates<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 an instructor can close the current phase and open the next phase manually, at any time. This is valuable for sessions when timelines are flexible or for in-class activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Schedule due dates<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 an instructor can schedule due dates and times so that each phase opens and closes automatically per the schedule. This is effective for fully online courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"note\"><h4>Note<\/h4>\n<p>Only one phase of an activity can be open at any point in time. An open phase must close before the next phase can open.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Choose <strong>Schedule Due Date<\/strong> (this would be the best option in most cases)<\/li><li>Set the <em>Create<\/em>, <em>Assess<\/em>, and <em>Reflect Phase <\/em>dates by clicking the pen icon in the associated box and selecting the dates for the phase to open and close. Click <strong>Confirm Dates<\/strong>. If all students submit late there will be no peer assignments to assess!<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Customize the grading<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"note\">\n<h4>Tip<\/h4>\n<p>Have your grading scheme for the assignment ready &#8211; There are three ways to add students to each teaching assistant for grading purposes: <strong>Randomize<\/strong>, <strong>Bulk Assign<\/strong>, or <strong>Assign Students<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Randomize \u2013&nbsp;<strong>randomly<\/strong>&nbsp;assign students to the teaching assistants<\/li><li>Assign \u2013&nbsp;<strong>manually<\/strong>&nbsp;assign students to the teaching assistants by clicking on the + icon next to each students name and select the teaching assistant from the dropdown menu<\/li><li>Bulk \u2013&nbsp;<strong>assign via a CSV file<\/strong>&nbsp;a large set of students to the teaching assistants<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Click <strong>Finish\u00a0<\/strong>to complete and save your activity. The activity <strong>Overview <\/strong>page will open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 6: Review<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Overview <\/strong>page of your peerScholar activity will have the following features for review and progress tracking purposes.
