class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating a Discussion Topic<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d9f0fe\"><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: Students cannot post in a discussion forum alone. Availability Dates &amp; Conditions<\/strong> (optional)<\/h4><div id=\"ac-326891\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>In this section, you can set the following parameters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Availability Dates<\/strong> &#8211; You can set a <strong>Start <\/strong>and an <strong>End Date<\/strong> for your topic, and thus make it available to students only for a period of time. For example, if you want to restrict access to a topic details until a certain date, but you also want to leave the topic open for students to view even after the discussion has ended, the best options would be:<br>1. <strong><em>Visible with access restricted<\/em><\/strong> with Start Date, and<br>2. <strong><em>Visible with submission restricted<\/em><\/strong> with End Date. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Release Conditions<\/strong> can be attached to the topic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Group and Section Restrictions<\/strong> can be applied. This setting allows you to divide students into smaller teams (groups or course sections) for the discussion. You can organize group discussions in two different ways:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can assign each group a different topic. To do this, select <strong>Restrict topic<\/strong> and choose the specific group that should discuss the topic you are creating. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can assign the same discussion topic to the whole class, but each group would only see their own group&#8217;s posts. To do this, select <strong>Restrict topic and separate the threads<\/strong> and then choose the relevant <strong>Group Category or Section<\/strong>. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d9f0fe\"><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: Groups have to be created prior to this step.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default border\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/technologyresources\/files\/2024\/02\/discussions21c-1024x348.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32813\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Discussions: Group restriction options<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h4 id=\"at-326892\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\"><strong>C.
