class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating a Discussion Forum<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d9f0fe\"><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: Students cannot post in a discussion forum alone. Here, enter the <strong>Title<\/strong> for your forum. Directly underneath the title, you can find the option to <strong>&#8216;Create a new topic with the same title&#8217;<\/strong> as the forum. As an instructor, you will always be able to see who authored each post.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Users must start a thread before they can read and reply to other threads in each to<\/em>pic<\/strong> &#8211; Select if you want students to create an original post before they can see other students&#8217; posts.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>A moderator must approve individual posts before they display in the forum<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; Select if you want to manually approve each student&#8217;s post before others in the class can see it. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Display forum description in topics<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; Select if you want the forum description to be repeated in each topic created in the forum. If you plan to have multiple topics in a forum, a better option is for each topic to have its own description.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Save <\/strong>the forum.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h4 id=\"at-325251\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\"><strong>2. Restrictions<\/strong> <strong>tab<\/strong><\/h4><div id=\"ac-325251\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d9f0fe\"><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: Setting restrictions at the level of a forum is optional. Alternatively, you can set restrictions for the <strong><em>topics <\/em><\/strong>you will create in the forum (the same restriction types are available). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At the top of a <strong>New\/Edit Forum<\/strong> page, go to the <strong>Restrictions<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default border\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"756\" height=\"140\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/technologyresources\/files\/2024\/02\/discussions12a.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/technologyresources\/files\/2024\/02\/discussions12a.png 756w, https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/technologyresources\/files\/2024\/02\/discussions12a-300x56.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Discussions: Restrictions tab in a forum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Here you can set these optional parameters: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hide from Users<\/strong> &#8211; Selecting this option makes a forum invisible to students. You can hide a forum while you are still developing it, but you are not yet ready to share it with students. When you are ready to share a forum with the class, you need to manually unselect this setting.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default border\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"597\" height=\"135\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/technologyresources\/files\/2024\/02\/discussions28.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32885\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/technologyresources\/files\/2024\/02\/discussions28.png 597w, https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/technologyresources\/files\/2024\/02\/discussions28-300x68.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Discussions: Hiding a forum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Availability Dates<\/strong> &#8211; You can set a <strong>Start <\/strong>and an <strong>End Date<\/strong> for a forum and thus make it available to students only for a period of time. If you apply one or both availability dates, you should also select the <strong>Display in Calendar<\/strong> option so that students can see the dates in the course calendar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d9f0fe\"><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: Please review the visibility options associated with the Start and End Dates carefully.
