class=\"wp-block-heading\">Class Progress Tool<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Class Progress tool<\/strong> is a feature in Brightspace that allows instructors to monitor each student&#8217;s activity in a course. From a single location, instructors can check, for example: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>which content topics a student has visited,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how many discussion posts they have read and created, or <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how often they log in to Brightspace. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the <strong>Class Progress tool<\/strong> can assist instructors in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tracking the performance of individual students (or the class as a whole)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helping identify learners who may need support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generating progress reports<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reflecting on a course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong> <\/strong>Click the tabs below for more information on the <strong>Class Progress<\/strong> <strong>tool<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h4 id=\"at-307510\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\"><strong>&gt; <strong>Progress Indicators<\/strong> (i.e. What You Can Monitor)<\/strong><\/h4><div id=\"ac-307510\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>Instructors can monitor student progress in 9 different aspects of a course. These aspects are called &#8216;progress indicators&#8217; and include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Content Completion <\/strong>&#8211; shows how many <em>required <\/em>content topics a student has completed, and how much time they spent on each topic (for more information on content tracking, please refer to the last tab on this page).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Objectives Completion<\/strong> \u2013 if a course has objectives linked to it, this indicator shows which course objectives a student has achieved.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grades Performance <\/strong>&#8211; displays a bar chart representing student grades for the last 15 assessments, as well as the current final grade for each student.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Assignments Performance <\/strong>&#8211; displays a bar chart representing grades for the last 15 assignments, as well as the average grade for all assignment submissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Checklist Completion <\/strong>\u2013 if a course contains checklists, this indicator displays student progress through the checklists.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Content Visited <\/strong>&#8211; shows which content topics students have accessed in the Content tool and how much time they spent on each topic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Discussions Participation <\/strong>\u2013 shows how many discussion posts a student has posted and read.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Quiz Performance <\/strong>&#8211; displays a bar chart representing student grades on the last 15 quizzes, as well as the average grade on all quizzes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Survey Completion <\/strong>&#8211; displays students&#8217; progression through the assigned surveys in the course.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to course-specific information, the Class Progress tool can also be used to track:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Login History<\/strong> \u2013 shows the number of logins to the Brightspace system (but not a specific course) over the last 30 days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>System Access<\/strong> \u2013 indicates how many times a student has accessed the Brightspace system in the last 30 days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Only 4 indicators can be displayed on the Class Progress overview page at one time. Important Information about Content Completion<\/strong><\/h4><div id=\"ac-307515\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>One progress indicator that requires additional focus is <strong>Content Completion<\/strong>. As noted earlier in this resource, the Content Completion indicator allows instructors to track how many <em>required<\/em> content topics a student has completed, and how much time they spent on each topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The default setting for content modules and topics in Brightspace is \u2018Not required\u2019. Therefore, if an instructor wishes to track students\u2019 progression through course content, they need to manually change that setting to \u2018Required\u2019. Only then will the Brightspace system record information about students\u2019 progression through content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-background wp-block-list\" style=\"background-color:#d9f0fe\">\n<li><strong>A Word of Caution:<\/strong> Tracking the time a student has spent viewing course content in Brightspace should be done with caution since it may not be an accurate reflection of how much the student engaged with the content. Some reasons why time tracking may be inaccurate include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A student may download course content and view it on their own device rather than in Brightspace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A student may open a content item in a new browser tab for viewing, in which case Brightspace would not record that time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a student loses internet connection while viewing content, the content page may remain open on the screen, but Brightspace would stop measuring time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The options for changing content completion settings are <strong><em>Required: Automatic <\/em><\/strong>and <strong><em>Required: Manual<\/em><\/strong>. Selecting <strong><em>Required: Automatic <\/em><\/strong>means that when a student clicks on a content item (module or topic), it will be automatically marked as complete. Selecting <strong><em>Required: Manual<\/em><\/strong> means that students will have to manually select a checkbox next to the content item to mark it as complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Content completion requirement can be set at the level of 1. a content topic, 2. a content module, or 3. all content at once. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.
