All Brightspace course sites at Memorial have the same standard design. However, instructors have the option to customize the course homepage to meet their instructional needs. One way to customize it is to change the widgets (content blocks on the page). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of widgets is to provide links to frequently used tools directly on the course homepage, so that students can access them easily without having to navigate through the course site. A standard homepage contains a standard set of widgets: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Announcements, Course Content, Updates <\/strong>on the left side of the screen, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Calendar, Learning Resources, Role Switch<\/strong>, and <strong>Grades2Banner <\/strong>on the right. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, instructors can customize the homepage by adding, removing, and modifying widgets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits of Using Widgets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective use of widgets in Brightspace benefits both students and instructors in the following ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Instructors have more control over where students look for information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>External tools can be incorporated directly into the course site<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The homepage can become a single platform for course content and additional course resources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The homepage can be made more interactive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sample Widgets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The chart below lists some of the widgets available on a Brightspace course site and their purpose. The middle column indicates the visibility of the widget\u2014while most widgets are visible to both students and instructors (&#8220;S\/I&#8221;), some are visible to the instructor only (&#8220;I&#8221;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-14\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-14\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Widget Type<\/th><th class=\"column-2\">Visibility<\/th><th class=\"column-3\">Function of Widget<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody class=\"row-striping row-hover\">\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Bookmarks<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">S\/I<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Provides direct access to previously bookmarked parts of course content.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Calendar<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">S\/I<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Contains two elements: a mini-calendar and a list of upcoming events added by instructors (meetings, quizzes, deadlines etc.). Clicking on a particular day in the mini-calendar limits the upcoming events to that day only. Clicking on any upcoming event on the list takes users to that event in the Calendar tool.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-4\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Course Reserves<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">S\/I<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Provides a direct link to the library course reserves. For information on Course Reserves, visit this library page.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-5\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Getting Started<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">I<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Contains a link to the \u2018Course Design Accelerator\u2019\u2014a tool that instructors can use as a guide when creating their course site. Once the \u2018Course Design Accelerator\u2019 is launched from the Getting Started widget, it takes instructors through the process of designing a Brightspace course site and provides direct links to the various tools within it.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-6\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Google Search<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">S\/I<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Provides a direct link to the Google search engine. Search results open in a new window in a web browser.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-7\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Grades2Banner<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">I<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Provides instructors with a direct link to the \u2018Instructor Tools\u2019 page where final course grades can be transferred to Banner directly from the Brightspace grade book.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-8\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Learning Resources<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">S\/I<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Provides links to other units at Memorial University that provide support to students (e.g., Writing Services, Academic Advising).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-9\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Role Switch<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">I<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Allows instructors to temporarily view the course as it would appear to students. The student preview applies only to general areas of the course (Announcements, Course Content, Discussions etc.), but not to student-specific areas such as Grades. Note: you cannot view the course as a specific student.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-10\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Tasks<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">S\/I<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Enables users to create a personalized list of tasks to complete in a course, along with the due date and additional notes. The system then sorts the tasks into the categories of Today, Upcoming, or Someday (no due date). Once a task is completed, you can check it off and it will disappear from the list. However, you can always view your completed tasks by clicking the \u2018View Completed Tasks\u2019 link.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-11\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Updates<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">S\/I<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Displays any new activity in the course. This can done in one of two ways.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle wp-block-ub-content-toggle-block\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-block-dfaa91a4-e7b6-4452-b575-157883990df2\" data-mobilecollapse=\"true\" data-desktopcollapse=\"true\" data-preventcollapse=\"false\" data-showonlyone=\"false\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion\" style=\"border-color: #f1f1f1; border-top-left-radius: 8px; border-top-right-radius: 8px; border-bottom-left-radius: 8px; border-bottom-right-radius: 8px; \" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-block-\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title-wrap\" style=\"background-color: #f1f1f1;\" aria-controls=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-0-dfaa91a4-e7b6-4452-b575-157883990df2\" tabindex=\"0\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title ub-content-toggle-title-dfaa91a4-e7b6-4452-b575-157883990df2\" style=\"color: #000000; \">Method A: Copy the <strong>Default Course Homepage<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-0-dfaa91a4-e7b6-4452-b575-157883990df2\">\n\n<p>1. Create a copy of the &#8216;Default Course Homepage&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the course navbar, go to <strong>Course Admin<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the <strong>Site Setup<\/strong> section, click <strong>Homepages.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Locate the <strong>Default Course Homepage <\/strong>on the list and click the down arrow next to it. In the menu that opens, select <strong>Copy<\/strong>. (You can copy any of the pages listed here, but we recommend using the Default Course Homepage as the template.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have just created a copy of the <strong>Default Course Homepage<\/strong> (it should be listed just below the original version). Blue front indicates that the page is editable (pages listed in black font are non-editable).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Activate your new homepage<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the <strong>Homepages<\/strong> page, locate the <strong>Active Homepage<\/strong> box and click the down arrow inside it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From the drop-down menu that opens, select <strong>Default Course Homepage &#8211; Copy<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Apply<\/strong>. Your new homepage is now activated and ready to be modified.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you have created and activated your new homepage, you are ready to customize it according to your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Customize your new homepage<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the <strong>Homepages <\/strong>page, locate the <strong>Default Course Homepage &#8211; Copy<\/strong> that you just created and click on it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A page titled <em>Edit homepage<\/em> will open. On this page, you can change the name of your new homepage and make other available modifications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scroll down to the <strong>Widgets<\/strong> section.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may now begin to customize the widgets on your homepage. Each panel has a dashed outline around it. The two-panel layout can be changed by clicking the <strong>Change Layout<\/strong> button right above the <strong>Widgets<\/strong> section on your \u2018Edit homepage\u2019 or &#8216;Create homepage&#8217; page. However, the width of the panels cannot be changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On your course homepage, decide if you want to add a new widget to the left or the right panel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the <strong>Add Widgets<\/strong> button at the bottom of the panel you have selected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the new window that opens, you can select widgets from either <strong>System Widgets<\/strong> or <strong>Custom Widgets<\/strong>. You will find two lists of widgets here: <strong>System widgets<\/strong> (cannot be copied or modified) and <strong>Custom widgets<\/strong> (can be copied and modified to create custom versions).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find the widget you would like to copy. Select the <strong>Copy<\/strong> icon to the right of the widget\u2019s name (under <strong>Actions<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A copy of the widget will now appear right under its original version.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To the right of your newly copied widget, locate the <strong>Edit<\/strong> icon and click on it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the new window that opens, in the <strong>Properties<\/strong> tab, rename your widget.
