More than one attendance register can be created in each course (e.g., one for lectures and another one for labs), and each register can be customized to suit your needs. Attendance registers can also be made visible to students, so they can track their own information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group note-container has-base-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Note<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Attendance tracking is not automatic &#8211; instructors need to manually enter attendance data for each session where attendance is taken.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group note-container has-base-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Note<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Attendance recorded in the Attendance Tool cannot be linked to a grade item. If you want to use the attendance data to assign participation grades in your course, you have to manually enter the grades into the grade book.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating Attendance Register<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<strong>register&nbsp;<\/strong>is a tool used to mark attendance in your course. Each register you create is a grouping of meetings for which you plan to track attendance. For example, if you want to track attendance in weekly labs, you may create a register named&nbsp;<em>Weekly Labs<\/em>. If you also plan to track attendance in lectures, you may create an additional register named&nbsp;<em>Lecture Attendance<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To create a register, follow the steps below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click on&nbsp;<strong>Course Admin<\/strong>&nbsp;on the navbar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the&nbsp;<em>Learner Management<\/em>&nbsp;section, select&nbsp;<strong>Attendance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on&nbsp;<strong>New Register<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under&nbsp;<em>Properties<\/em>, enter a&nbsp;<strong>Name&nbsp;<\/strong>of your new register (e.g.,&nbsp;<em>ENG3050 Attendance<\/em>) and optionally a&nbsp;<strong>Description<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under&nbsp;<em>Attendance Scheme<\/em>, select the&nbsp;<strong>System Scheme<\/strong>&nbsp;(with&nbsp;<em>Present&nbsp;<\/em>= 100% and&nbsp;<em>Absent&nbsp;<\/em>= 0% as the only options) or another scheme that you have previously created (see&nbsp;<em>How do I create my own attendance scheme?<\/em>&nbsp;in this resource).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you wish, you can enter a&nbsp;<strong>Cause for Concern&nbsp;<\/strong>value \u2013 the minimum attendance requirement for the course (e.g. 75%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under&nbsp;<strong>Visibility<\/strong>, check&nbsp;<em>Allow users to view this attendance register<\/em>&nbsp;if you want to give students access to their own attendance data in this register.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under&nbsp;<em>Users<\/em>, you can choose to include all students in the course or specific groups of students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under&nbsp;<em>Sessions<\/em>, add&nbsp;<strong>Session Names<\/strong>&nbsp;and optionally&nbsp;<strong>Session Descriptions<\/strong>&nbsp;(e.g.&nbsp;<em>Lecture 1, Lecture 2<\/em>, etc.). These sessions are the days the class meets and when you plan to take attendance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>Close&nbsp;<\/strong>to return to the&nbsp;<em>Attendance&nbsp;<\/em>page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tracking Attendance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have created a register, you can begin recording attendance data. In a session where you want to take attendance, do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click on&nbsp;<strong>Course Admin<\/strong>&nbsp;on the navbar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the&nbsp;<em>Learner Management<\/em>&nbsp;section, select&nbsp;<strong>Attendance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Locate the attendance register you want to use and click on its name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the&nbsp;<em>Attendance Data<\/em>&nbsp;page that opens, locate the session for which you want to take attendance. Click the calendar icon next to it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the&nbsp;<em>Set Attendance Data<\/em>&nbsp;page that opens, set the&nbsp;<strong>Attendance Status<\/strong>&nbsp;for each student by clicking the down arrow next to their name and selecting the appropriate symbol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group note-container has-base-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Note<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to set the attendance status in bulk, select students by using the checkboxes next to their names and then click the&nbsp;Set Status&nbsp;button. In order to record attendance for all users at once, click the&nbsp;Set Status for All Users&nbsp;button.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To view the up-to-date attendance data for your course, click on the the name of the appropriate attendance register to display the complete data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Attendance Schemes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An attendance scheme provides the criteria for marking attendance in a register. The default scheme in Brightspace (named&nbsp;<strong>System Scheme<\/strong>) is P (100%) for present and A (0%) for absent. You can also create custom attendance schemes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To create a custom attendance scheme, follow the steps below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click on&nbsp;<strong>Course Admin<\/strong>&nbsp;on the navbar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the&nbsp;<em>Learner Management<\/em>&nbsp;section, select&nbsp;<strong>Attendance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the&nbsp;page that opens, locate the&nbsp;<strong>Attendance Schemes&nbsp;<\/strong>tab directly underneath the navbar. Click on it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on&nbsp;<strong>New Scheme<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give your new scheme a name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the&nbsp;<strong>Symbols<\/strong>&nbsp;you would like to appear when entering attendance data for each attendance status (e.g.,&nbsp;<strong>L&nbsp;<\/strong>for late).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the&nbsp;<strong>Status Full Name<\/strong>&nbsp;for each attendance status (e.g.,&nbsp;<strong>Late<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the&nbsp;<strong>Assigned %<\/strong>&nbsp;for each status (e.g.,&nbsp;<strong>75<\/strong>&nbsp;for late,&nbsp;<strong>100<\/strong>&nbsp;for present, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>Save<\/strong>. The new attendance scheme is now ready to use in any of your attendance registers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>Close<\/strong>&nbsp;to return to the&nbsp;<strong>Attendance Schemes<\/strong>&nbsp;page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cause for Concern<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Cause for Concern<\/strong>&nbsp;percentage is the minimum attendance requirement for the course. If a student\u2019s attendance drops below that percentage, the student will be flagged on the<em>&nbsp;Attendance Data&nbsp;<\/em>page. You can set the cause for concern to a desired value by following the steps below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click on&nbsp;<strong>Course Admin<\/strong>&nbsp;on the navbar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the&nbsp;<em>Learner Management<\/em>&nbsp;section, select&nbsp;<strong>Attendance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the&nbsp;<strong>Attendance Registers<\/strong>&nbsp;page, click on&nbsp;<strong>New Register&nbsp;<\/strong>and follow the steps listed in&nbsp;<em>What is an attendance register?&nbsp;<\/em>above.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have previously created a register, locate it on the list of&nbsp;<strong>Attendance Registers<\/strong>. Click the down arrow next to it, and select&nbsp;<strong>Edit Register<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the page that opens, scroll down to&nbsp;<strong>Cause for Concern<\/strong>&nbsp;field and enter a percentage that indicates your minimum attendance requirement (e.g. 75%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deleting Registers and Schemes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can modify or delete any session, register, or scheme that you created. Note, however, that&nbsp;<strong>deleting a session, register, or scheme also clears all associated attendance data<\/strong>.
