Party Technology Tools<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>A decision to adopt a new technology requires careful consideration on the part of the instructor. Some key considerations involve the educational benefits of adopting the tool and the challenges\/risks that using the tool may pose for you and your students. This page lists some of the major factors to consider prior to integrating a third-party educational technology into your course. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h4 id=\"at-123210\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\"><strong>&gt; Choosing the best tool for your course<\/strong><\/h4><div id=\"ac-123210\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>There is a multitude of educational technology tools and applications available to instructors these days. When choosing one that will be the best fit for a course, instructors should consider the following questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Will the tool\/app enhance my instruction and motivate learners?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I just incorporating technology for the sake of incorporating technology?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How does this tool\/app help my students meet the stated objectives\/outcomes?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will the tool\/app encourage students to apply the content and learn the material, construct knowledge and\/or promote critical thinking?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the tool\/app easy to learn?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have I included good instructions for the students to use the tool\/app?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have answered those questions in the affirmative, you are ready to incorporate the tool\/app. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h4 id=\"at-123211\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\"><strong>&gt; Six major considerations when adopting a tool<\/strong><\/h4><div id=\"ac-123211\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>While the use of any tool to assist in teaching and learning is at the instructor\u2019s discretion, it\u2019s important to address the following six considerations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Alignment, or fit, with instructional goal or outcome.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Review institutionally supported tools to determine whether your instructional needs can be met before considering 3<sup>rd<\/sup> party tools <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(see <a href=\"https:\/\/citl.mun.ca\/technologies\/guide\/\">CITL\u2019s Learning Technology Index<\/a>).&nbsp;<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alternatives for students who cannot use the tool.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Having a \u201cplan B\u201d is important, regardless of the tool you are using.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students\u2019 use may be limited by a variety of legitimate factors, barriers to accessibility; limits of their technology; or privacy concerns.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cost of tool, either to instructor or student.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Associated costs may be a deterrent for participation and can potentially impact the intended use.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cFree\u201d is not always \u201cfree\u201d \u2014 some tools require personal details or data before access is granted; be sure you know what the company will do with your personal data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Free versions of tools often come with less functionality or a limited time of free use.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Privacy of students, and of any personal information.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some tools collect and store user information, so it is important for you to understand why they are doing this and what the vendor does with the data.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Security of data, including geographic location of where the data is stored.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is not uncommon for data to be stored in other countries governed by privacy laws different from those in Canada. Be sure you read and understand the company\u2019s data security policies.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>End-user license agreements and implications for intellectual property, for both instructors and students.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some products assume a level of \u201cownership\u201d and \u201cpermission for use\u201d of works shared or created using the tool, or both.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefit of using a tool supported by the University is that the cost, privacy, intellectual property, and security questions have been addressed. <em>Even for University supported tools considerations one and two are relevant.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pb-accordion-item c-accordion__item js-accordion-item no-js\" data-initially-open=\"false\" data-click-to-close=\"true\" data-auto-close=\"true\" data-scroll=\"false\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\"><h4 id=\"at-123212\" class=\"c-accordion__title js-accordion-controller\" role=\"button\"><strong>&gt; Instructor responsibilities<\/strong><\/h4><div id=\"ac-123212\" class=\"c-accordion__content\">\n<p>If an instructor chooses to use a tool that is not supported by the University, they are responsible for ensuring student privacy is protected and students are supported in their use of the tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the event of a privacy breach associated with any tools (supported or unsupported) instructors must advise the University\u2019s Information Access and Privacy (IAP) Office and follow their direction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will include notifying the province\u2019s Information and Privacy Commissioner.
