SUMMARY:Using AI to Enhance Student Writing (CITL Instructor Series)
DESCRIPTION:The presenter for this session is Mr. Mark Picco\, Instructor and Technical Communications Coordinator\, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science \nRoughly a year ago\, the pedagogical landscape was transformed by widespread accessibility to generative AI tools like ChatGPT. The mere existence of such tools was polarizing: some instructors wanted to readily accept whatever AI had to offer students\, while others worried that AI misuse would lead to violations of academic integrity. One year later\, educators are trying to strike a balance between facilitating student writing using AI and making sure that student work is completed genuinely and ethically. \nIn this session\, Mark Picco\, Instructor in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science will discuss how AI tools are best used by students in the writing process. First\, the use of AI in producing written content will be examined (and discouraged). The session will also cover two ethical and effective uses of AI: pre-writing and revising. Because all of the AI tools featured in the workshop will be free for students to use\, instructors will immediately gain a handy AI toolbox that can be shared with students who are about to undertake written assignments. \nThis is an online session and it will be recorded. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. It is recommended that you attend this session using one of the following internet browsers:  Chrome\, Microsoft Edge (Chromium) or Firefox. \nRegistration is required for this event. *CLICK HERE TO REGISTER*

SUMMARY:Rubrics in Brightspace
DESCRIPTION:Rubrics are an effective and efficient way to authentically assess student learning. Articulating specific criteria by which students will be assessed helps learners to prepare more thoughtful submissions that are aligned with your expectations. As an added bonus\, rubrics provide an objective and systematic method for grading work. Brightspace Rubrics tool offers a variety of rubric types and easy-to-modify templates to meet your specific assessment needs. \nThis session will provide an overview of the benefits and best practices in designing rubrics\, an introduction to rubrics in Brightspace\, along with step-by-step guidance on how to create and add a rubric to your assessment. \nThis session will be hosted in Webex. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. SUMMARY:Creating Secure Assessments with Advanced Quiz Settings
DESCRIPTION:Presenting each student in your course with a slightly different version of the same quiz deters academic dishonesty and thus increases the integrity of the assessment. \nThe Quizzes tool in Brightspace allows instructors to configure quizzes in a way that will present each student with a different version of the same quiz. In this session\, various methods of randomizing a Brightspace quiz will be illustrated such as shuffling questions and answer choices; creating a question pool and populating a quiz (or a section within it) with a random selection of questions from the pool; and more. The function of the ‘Question Library’ will also be discussed. \nThis session will be hosted in Webex. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. It is recommended that you attend this session using one of the following internet browsers: Chrome\, Microsoft Edge or Firefox. \nRegistration is required for this event. *CLICK HERE TO REGISTER*
