SUMMARY:Introduction to Brightspace Quizzes
DESCRIPTION:This session will focus on the options available for assessing student learning using the Quizzes tool in Brightspace. Brightspace quizzes enable asking various types of questions of students\, and they are easy to set up\, administer\, and grade. Topics covered in this session include: \n\nCreating a quiz\nDue dates\, availability dates\, and other restrictions\nAppropriate security settings\nProviding special access for select students\nAccessing and grading student submissions\n\nWays of creating a different version of a quiz for each student (shuffling\, using question pools or sections\, etc.) will also be presented. \nThis session will be hosted in Webex. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. It is recommended that you attend this session using one of the following internet browsers: Chrome\, Microsoft Edge or Firefox. \nRegistration is required for this event. \n>> CLICK HERE TO REGISTER <<

SUMMARY:Video Assignment as an Alternative Assessment Tool
DESCRIPTION:The Video Assignment tool\, developed by Bongo and available in Brightspace\, allows instructors to implement video-based assessments that evaluate students on speeches\, presentations\, and more. Apart from individual and group presentations\, instructors can also create question- and-answer assessments where students need to respond to questions that appear on the screen in real time. An added bonus is that the video assessments can be created and graded directly in Brightspace. \nIn this session\, we will review the types of assessments that can be created through the video assignment tool and go over the process of creating them in Brightspace.

SUMMARY:Mapping the operative moment of generative AI (CITL Instructor Series)
DESCRIPTION:The presenter for this session is Dr. Aaron Tucker\, Assistant Professor\, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences\, Department of English. \nGaining a clear understanding of how generative AI functions is critical to making informed decisions on how it can impact you and your teaching practice. \nIn this introductory-level workshop\, Dr. Tucker will explore with participants the basics of artificial neural networks and provide an overview of contemporary machine learning techniques. Participants will then map the basics of how text-based and image-based Generative AI\, such as ChatGPT and DALL-E\, operate. From this\, participants will reflect on how this enhanced literacy can be incorporated into their own pedagogy\, through assignment design\, lecture materials\, and discussions of academic integrity. \nThis is a hybrid session (offered online and in-person) and it will be recorded.  \nIf attending online\, it is recommended that you attend this session using one of the following internet browsers:  Chrome\, Microsoft Edge (Chromium) or Firefox. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time.   \nIf attending in-person\, the session will be held in the TLX (ED 1001).   \nRegistration is required for this event. \n*CLICK HERE TO REGISTER*

SUMMARY:Using Rubrics in Brightspace
DESCRIPTION:Rubrics are a scoring tool that outlines specific criteria for evaluating student work. Articulating evaluation criteria helps learners prepare more thoughtful submissions that are aligned with instructor expectations. Once students submit or present their work\, rubrics also provide an efficient\, objective\, and systematic method for grading. \nThe Rubrics tool in Brightspace offers easy-to-modify templates to meet your specific assessment needs. Once created\, the rubrics can be shared with students and used to evaluate submissions to Assignments\, Discussions and more. \nThis session will provide an overview of the benefits and best practices in designing rubrics\, an introduction to rubrics in Brightspace\, along with step-by-step guidance on how to create and add a rubric to your assessment.

SUMMARY:Supporting Student Progress Through Lesser Known Brightspace Tools
DESCRIPTION:Brightspace offers a range of tools that allow instructors to monitor student activity in a course\, such as their engagement with course material or participation in discussions. Other Brightspace tools let you identify students who may be at risk (and those who are succeeding) and send those students automated yet personalized emails to help them stay motivated. \nThis session will focus on using the Class Progress tool to monitor student activity in Brightspace and using Intelligent Agents to help stay on the right track in their learning journey. \nThis session will be hosted in Webex. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. SUMMARY:Using AI to navigate academic literature (CITL Instructor Series)
DESCRIPTION:The presenter for this session is Alison Ambi MSc MLIS | Analytics & Data Librarian Collection Strategies\, Memorial University Libraries. \nGeneral Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT do not provide sources to support their output\, and are notoriously bad at generating accurate citations. However\, there are AI-powered discovery tools that take advantage of LLM functionality to lead researchers to relevant academic literature (for example Scite Assistant\, Consensus\, and Keenious). We are also beginning to see AI tools incorporated in library databases and indexes like Scopus and Web of Science. \nIn this session\, Alison Ambi\, from Memorial Libraries will demonstrate some of these tools and discuss their pros and cons for students and researchers searching for books and articles. \nThis is an online session and it will be recorded. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. SUMMARY:Creating Secure Assessments with Advanced Quiz Settings
DESCRIPTION:Presenting each student in your course with a slightly different version of the same quiz deters academic dishonesty and thus increases the integrity of the assessment. \nThe Quizzes tool in Brightspace allows instructors to configure quizzes in a way that will present each student with a different version of the same quiz. In this session\, various methods of randomizing a Brightspace quiz will be illustrated such as shuffling questions and answer choices; creating a question pool and populating a quiz (or a section within it) with a random selection of questions from the pool; and more. The function of the ‘Question Library’ will also be discussed. \nThis session will be hosted in Webex. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time.
