SUMMARY:Exploring a Hyflex Model of Teaching and Learning (CITL Instructor Series)
DESCRIPTION:*** DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES\, THIS EVEN HAS BEEN CANCELLED. ***\nThe presenter for this session is Dr. Karen Goodnough\, Professor\, Faculty of Education \nHyflex courses use an instructional approach that combines face-to-face and online learning. Students may choose to participate in each class session in one of three ways: face-to-face\, online synchronously\, or online asynchronously. Regardless of the format\, students target the same learning outcomes and each format should offer the same level of engagement. Developed by Brain Beatty in 2019\, Hyflex learning environments should align with these core values: learner choice (different modes of participation)\, equivalence in terms of learning outcomes\, reusability (artifacts can be used in all three modes)\, and accessibility (students have the technology to participate in either mode). \nIn this session\, Dr. Goodnough will examine: a) the design of Hyflex courses (e.g. assessment and learning activities) such that students are meeting the same learning outcomes regardless of the way they access course information and learning experiences (face-to-face\, synchronously\, or asynchronously)\, and b) the affordances and limitations of adopting a Hyflex model. \nThis is an online session and it will be recorded. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. It is recommended that you attend this session using one of the following internet browsers:  Chrome\, Microsoft Edge (Chromium) or Firefox. \nRegistration is required for this event. *CLICK HERE TO REGISTER*

SUMMARY:Applied Learning: incorporating student constructed case studies. (CITL Instructor Series)
DESCRIPTION:The presenter for this session is Dr. Tiffany Lee\, Assistant Professor\, School of Pharmacy \nUsing case studies as a part of your instructional approach creates opportunities for student to use and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This authentic applied learning approach asks students to put into action what they are learning in the course to real-world scenarios. \nIn this session\, Dr. Tiffany Lee will describe how she developed a scaffold assessment approach in her Pharmacy course that had students reflecting on their personal experiences and content knowledge to develop case studies that would be reviewed and actioned by their peers. Through each stage of the assessment\, Dr. Lee guided students through a framework that developed a culture of collegiately where appropriate and constructive feedback enhanced the overall learning experience. A first-hand account of the student experience with this approach will be shared\, coupled with a conversation around important considerations and lessons learned when using student constructed cases. \nThis is an online session and it will be recorded. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. SUMMARY:Social Annotation to Support Undergraduate Reading (CITL Instructor Series)
DESCRIPTION:The presenter for this session is Melanie Doyle\, Per-Course Instructor\, Department of  English\, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. \nUndergraduate student reading has often been described as a “don’t\, won’t\, can’t” problem (Horning\, 2013\, p. 1). Despite these problems\, it can be difficult for course instructors to support students’ development into strong critical readers because\, unlike problems with writing\, we do not often “see” problems with reading. \nThis session will introduce course instructors to social annotation\, a process whereby students collaboratively annotate or “mark up” assigned readings. In the session\, Melanie will describe how she implemented social annotation into her first-year critical reading and writing (CRW) course. Participants will learn what social annotation is\, how it compares to other reading assessments\, and how it can support students’ reading and writing development. \nThis is a hybrid session (offered online and in-person) and it will be recorded. \n It is recommended that you attend this session using one of the following internet browsers:  Chrome\, Microsoft Edge (Chromium) or Firefox.  \nRegistration is required for this event. *CLICK HERE TO REGISTER*

SUMMARY:Creating Secure Assessments with Advanced Quiz Settings
DESCRIPTION:Presenting each student in your course with a slightly different version of the same quiz deters academic dishonesty and thus increases the integrity of the assessment. \nThe Quizzes tool in Brightspace allows instructors to configure quizzes in a way that will present each student with a different version of the same quiz. In this session\, various methods of randomizing a Brightspace quiz will be illustrated such as shuffling questions and answer choices; creating a question pool and populating a quiz (or a section within it) with a random selection of questions from the pool; and more. The function of the ‘Question Library’ will also be discussed. \nThis session will be hosted in Webex. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time.
