SUMMARY:Mending and Making: Community Engagement Perspective in Practice (CITL Instructor Series)
DESCRIPTION:The presenter for this session is Ivan J White\, Mi’kmaw from Bay St. George\, Indigenous Education Specialist with Memorial University. \nIn this conversation\, Ivan J White\, Mi’kmaw from Flat Bay and Indigenous Education Specialist with Memorial University will speak to Mending and Making in the context of working with community. We make and mend relationships by telling our stories. This recognizes that both academics and community members have their own truth of experience and motivations when working together. Together\, these shared stories can add to the creation of a deeper learning experience for students and be mutually beneficial for the instructor and community. \nFrom Ivan J’s perspective we can all share in creating a better world through understanding and authentic practice of the following two principles: Msit No’kmaq (all my relations) helps to contextualize that everything is connected\, with this connection being unbreakable\, and Etuaptmumk (two-eyed seeing) to give us a path to work together for the mutual benefit of all. \nThe goal of this conversation is to share the two concepts in an authentic way so to allow participants to start the journey of reflection on how to engage community through inclusion\, collaboration and sharing. \nThis is an online session and it will be recorded. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. It is recommended that you attend this session using one of the following internet browsers:  Chrome\, Microsoft Edge (Chromium) or Firefox. \nRegistration is required for this event. *CLICK HERE TO REGISTER*

SUMMARY:Document Review Support: Accessibility
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered if your course material (handouts\, charts\, and other documents) are accessible to all students?  Have you thought about how the visual presentation of these documents may present barriers to student learning? \nIn honour of Global Accessibility Awareness Day and in collaboration with Accessibility Services (Blundon Centre)\, CITL’s Learning Technology Coaches would like to invite Memorial’s instructional staff to participate in an accessibility document review process. \nUsing best practices as outlined by WebAIM\, coaches will use accessibility checklists for Word\, PowerPoint and PDF documents to review documents and highlight items that can be adjusted to make it more accessible.  These checklists focus on the accessible use of headings\, appropriate inclusion of tables\, images and other formatting features. \nIf you would like to have any of your learning material reviewed against these checklists\, you are invited to drop by the Teaching and Learning Exchange (ED 1001) between 10am and 4pm  OR you can send your document(s) to ltc_citl@mun.ca and we will conduct the review and return a findings report along with recommendations on how to improve the document.

SUMMARY:Maintaining Test Integrity with Advanced Quiz Settings
DESCRIPTION:Presenting each student in your course with a slightly different version of the same quiz increases the integrity of the assessment\, as students are less likely to turn to academic dishonesty. \nThe Brightspace Quizzes tool allows instructors to configure quizzes in a such a way that each student will get a different version of the same quiz. In this session\, various methods of randomizing a Brightspace quiz will be illustrated such as shuffling questions and answer choices; creating a question pool and populating a quiz (or a section within it) with a random selection of questions from the pool; and more. The role of the ‘Question Library’ will also be discussed. \nThis session will be hosted in Webex. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. We will also focus on using rubrics to generate higher-order thinking (i.e.\, critical thinking\, problem-solving\, and creativity). Dr. Sinclair focus the session on meaningful and pragmatic rubric use\, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own rubrics to the session to share and exchange ideas. \nThis is an online session and it will be recorded. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. SUMMARY:Peer Review: An Assessment Approach (CITL Instructor Series)
DESCRIPTION:The presenter for this session is Dr. Jillian Gould\, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Newfoundland and Labrador Studies. \nUsing Peer Review as an assessment strategy presents many benefits to the students and the instructor. While instructor feedback is valuable\, asking students to respond to each other’s work provides additional opportunities for feedback without increasing the instructor’s workload. Peer review fosters students’ awareness of their own and others’ learning\, while encouraging the development of skills like critical thinking and providing constructive feedback and helps to develop critical thinking skills. \nIn this session\, Dr. Gould will explain the rationale for adding this form of assessment to her undergraduate Folklore course\, and speak to the challenges and opportunities presented through its implementation.

SUMMARY:Social Media Use in the Classroom (CITL Instructor Series)
DESCRIPTION:The presenters for this session are Adrienne Peters\, PhD (she/her)\, Assistant Professor\, Undergraduate Director of Criminology\, Department of Sociology; and Laura Squires (M.A.)\, Project Coordinator at fasdNL. \nLimited research suggests that social media is a tool that can positively impact student engagement in the online classroom\, which is especially relevant in the case of the COVID-19 pandemic and learning formats transitioning online. You can read their full article here. \nThis is an online session and it will be recorded. You can join the session 10 minutes before the start time.
