SUMMARY:CITL Fall Book Study: "Inclusive Teaching"
DESCRIPTION:LIMITED REGISTRATION EVENT \nCITL is pleased to offer Memorial’s educator community the opportunity to participate in its inaugural Teaching and Learning Book Study. This fall\, Gavan Watson\, AVPA Teaching and Learning and Director\, CITL will lead an exploration into the book: Inclusive Teaching: Strategies for Promoting Equity in the College Classroom (2022) by University educators Kelly A. Hogan and Viji Sathy. \nAre you a curious educator (a tenured\, tenure-track\, teaching-term\, regular-term or per-course instructor) at Memorial with an interest in enhancing your classroom practices? Are you looking to explore what inclusive teaching practices and structures look like in the “real life” University classroom? If so\, consider joining 11 other colleagues in this book study. \nBy signing up for the book study you agree that you will attend all scheduled book study meetings (four dates across the Fall 2022 semester). Participants will be selected on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nThings you need to know:\n\nYou will read\, explore and collaboratively discuss the book Inclusive Teaching by Kelly Hogan and Viji Sathy;\nRegistration is limited to 12 participants;\nA copy of Inclusive Teaching will be provided at no cost; and\nThe group will meet in-person for up to 90 minutes\, four times this fall (all sessions scheduled for Tuesdays\, 1:30-3:00pm)\n\nStudy schedule:\n\nSeptember 27 – Preface\, Chapters 1 & 2 (61 pages)\nOctober 18 – Chapters 3 & 4 (56 pages)\nNovember 8 – Chapters 5 & 6 (90 pages)\nNovember 29 – Chapter 7 and book study closing (27 pages)\n\nAbout the book:\nThis book promises to provide readers with practical guidance to “…make all students feel welcome and included.” Recently reviewed in Science\, Inclusive Teaching is praised for “…translating the sometimes-dense literature of education research into clear\, accessible\, and actionable steps for instructors” by “…[weaving] firsthand accounts into the narrative\, describing the continual improvements they have made in their teaching over their respective careers.” In summary\, the book review author (Hsu\, 2022) writes: \n“The book addresses several underexplored\, but critical\, areas where instructors can play vital roles in promoting inclusion outside the classroom. A whole chapter\, for instance\, focuses on modeling inclusivity with students\, including suggestions for proactively emailing struggling students; promoting transparency and sharing norms about office hours; reducing bias in grading; and providing structured feedback to encourage students. Similarly\, another chapter is devoted to institutional change\, discussing how instructors can reflect and document their inclusive teaching practices and use their efforts to advocate for change.” \nRegistration will be open until September 9\, or until all spaces have been reserved.

SUMMARY:Assessments: Thinking Creatively (part of CITL Instructor Series)
DESCRIPTION:Building on the success of his MUNTLC22 conference session\, Dr. Chris Kozak\, Professor from the Department of Chemistry\, is back to share more about his experience with implementing Creative Chemistry Assignments with Art\, Music and Writing. Chemistry is a visual science of impressive experiments and models describing complex molecules\, structures and processes. It is also about storytelling – discoveries and facts come from intellectual journeys. While chemistry to some is exciting\, to others it is daunting and unfamiliar. Students of first year chemistry have a mixture of excitement and anticipation but also dread and feelings of being unprepared. To ease students into learning chemistry\, assignments were designed to use their creative skills and apply them to communicate chemistry using visual\, musical or written media. The student response to these Creative Chemistry Assignments will be presented. \nPresenter: Dr. Chris Kozak\, Professor\, Department of Chemistry\, Faculty of Science. \nRegistration is required for this event – please follow the link below to register: \n*REGISTER* \nThis is an online session and will be recorded. \nYou can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. SUMMARY:Ungrading: A Professor’s Perspective (part of CITL Instructor Series)
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, Dr. Jeannette Byrne\, Associate Professor in the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation\, will share her journey to the adoption of ungrading for the lab portion of HKR 4703 (Occupational Ergonomics and Sport Biomechanics). She will talk about why she adopted this approach to assessment\, how she did it\, what worked\, what didn’t\, and also share with you the journey she and her students took together during the semester as they both learned to do ‘ungrading’. This journey proved to be a transformational experience for Dr. Byrne’s students as they experienced\, many for the first time\, the freedom to “just learn”\, once the pressure of grades was removed. This will be an informal session\, with lots of time for questions\, discussion and learning! Come join us for this session and be part of the discussion around where (or if) ungrading fits in higher education. \nPresenter:  Dr. Jeannette Byrne\, Associate Professor\, School of Human Kinetics and Recreation. \nRegistration is required for this event – please follow the link below to register: \n*REGISTER* \nThis is an online session and will be recorded. \nYou can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. SUMMARY:Connecting Research and Practice in a Feedback Focused Classroom (part of CITL Instructor Series)
DESCRIPTION:In many applied fields (e.g.\, education\, social work\, and so forth)\, the gap between research and practice can be wide. In this session\, Dr. Joelle Rodway will discuss her use of a portfolio-based assessment strategy that emphasizes critical reflection as a pathway for connecting research and practice. Joelle will provide a detailed overview of the learning block structure that underpins the course design and explain how using thinking routines and critical reflection is enabling graduate students to make connections between their academic and professional lives. Central to the success of this approach is a deliberate focus on feedback\, providing an example how grading less is encouraging risk-taking and deeper learning. \nPresenter: Dr. Joelle Rodway\, Assistant Professor\, Faculty of Education. \nRegistration is required for this event – please follow the link below to register: \n*REGISTER* \nThis is an online session and will be recorded. \nYou can join the session 10 minutes before the start time. SUMMARY:CITL Winter Book Study - “Syllabus: The Remarkable\, Unremarkable Document that Changes Everything”
DESCRIPTION:LIMITED REGISTRATION EVENT \nCITL is proud to have the 2020 President’s Award winner for Outstanding Teaching\, Dr. Janna Rosales\, host the Winter 2023 Teaching and Learning Book Study Group. Dr. Rosales\, Associate Professor (Teaching) with the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science\, is calling all educators who want to delve deeper with effective teaching to join her in exploring the book Syllabus: The Remarkable\, Unremarkable Document that Changes Everything by William Germano and Kit Nicholls (Princeton University Press\, 2020). \nSpoiler alert: The book wasn’t written to provide fast and easy “tips and tricks” for punching up your syllabus! It is a much deeper dive to help you reflect on how and why you teach — the book will help you think about your teaching more deeply\, reveal things you may have taken for granted\, make you question your assumptions about students\, and shed new light on the future of university education more broadly. \n\nBy signing up for the book study you agree to attend all scheduled book study meetings (five dates across the Winter 2023 semester). Participants will be selected on a first-come\, first-served basis. \n\nThings you need to know:\n\nYou will read\, explore and collaboratively discuss the book Syllabus: The Remarkable\, Unremarkable Document that Changes Everything by William Germano and Kit Nicholls;\nRegistration is limited to 12 participants\nAn electronic copy of Syllabus: The Remarkable\, Unremarkable Document that Changes Everything can be accessed through MUN Libraries.\nThe group will meet online for up to 75 minutes at the schedule noted below (all sessions scheduled for Mondays\, 12-1:15pm)\n\nStudy schedule:\n\nJanuary 16 – Chapters 1 & 2 (49 pages)\nFebruary 6 – Chapters 3 & 4 (46 pages)\nFebruary 27 – Chapters 5 & 6 (46 pages)\nMarch 20 – Chapter 7 & 8 (40 pages)\nApril 10 – Chapter 9 & wrap-up  (16 pages)\n\nAbout the book:\n\nRather than offering a history of the syllabus\, which awaits other scholars\, Germano and Nicholls craft a powerful and unabashedly entertaining argument (an impressive feat for a book about a document that is often deadly boring) about how we can use our syllabuses to improve our teaching and our students’ learning.  Andrea Williams\, University of Toronto \nThe following article and podcast links will share more about what you can expect from this book: \n\nArticle: ‘Syllabus’ by Scott Jaschik\, Inside Higher Ed\nPodcast: The Syllabus with William Germano and Kit Nicholls from Dead Ideas in Teaching and Learning\, a podcast hosted by Catherine Ross\, Executive Director\, Centre for Teaching and learning\, ColumbiaU. (Episode: Feb 2021)\n\nRegistration will be open until January 9\, 2023 or until all spaces have been reserved.
