Grading and Feedback

Selecting a Grading Option

When setting up a video assignment, you need to determine how you are going to evaluate it. Several grading options are available. Click the tab below to view them.

> Grading Options

  • Percentage – Grade a submission on a scale from 0 to 100 percent.
  • Rubric – Select a rubric you have imported into or created in Bongo. You will score student submissions by assigning points to categories within the rubric. The assignment grade will be a score out of the total number of points allowed. When selecting Rubric, you will also have the option to enable self-assessment and peer review with the same rubric.
  • Pass/Fail – Grade a submission as either 0% or 100%.
  • Auto Pass – Automatically give learners a 100% when they make a submission. Learners who have not submitted will not have a score.
  • Five Star – Rate submissions with a 5-star rating scale. Each star is worth 20%. For example, if you select 4 stars, then the learner would get an 80%.

Using a Rubric

A rubric is one of the grading options available in a video assignment. Typically, the instructor would use the rubric to evaluate student submissions. However, the rubric can also be shared with students for peer review and for the purpose of self-evaluation before they submit their assignment.

If you wish to use a rubric, you need to create it in the Video Assignment tool (not in the Rubrics tool in Brightspace).

> Adding a rubric while creating an assignment

  • Create your video assignment as outlined on the ‘Creating Video Assignments’ page in this resource.
  • In the ‘General‘ section of the assignment creation window, select Rubric as the Evaluation Type.
Image: Rubric selected as evaluation type
  • Click the 3-dot menu icon to the right of the word ‘Rubric’. You will be prompted to choose between two options: Show Rubrics (if you have previously created a rubric for a video assignment) and Configure Rubrics if you want to create a new rubric.

  • If you selected Configure Rubrics in the previous step, you will be taken to Bongo’s Rubrics tool. To create a new rubric, click the plus sign in the bottom right corner of the page.

  • You will be prompted to either import a rubric from a .csv file on your computer or create one in the Bongo tool.

NOTE: If you choose to upload from a .csv file, the file must be properly formatted for Bongo. A guide is provided when you select this option.

Grading Video Assignments

Once students have uploaded their video assignments, you are ready to grade and provide feedback on their submissions.

> Grading Submissions

  • In your Brightspace course, go to the content module where the video assignment is located and click the assignment title.

  • You will see a list of students/groups along with assignment progress indicator next to each (Viewed, Not Viewed, Needs Evaluation etc.).
  • If you are ready to grade, click any name (or group) with a ‘Needs Evaluation‘ status.

  • In the evaluation window, you can view the submission and enter the grade in the Score field.

  • At this point, you can:
    • click Save and Publish if you want to publish the grade so that the student(s) can see it right away, or
    • click Save as Draft to save the grade for now but publish later (e.g., when all students’ submissions have been graded).
    Image: Publish and Save options

At this point, you can provide additional feedback on the submission (discussed in the next tab), or you can proceed to grade the next submission.

> Providing Feedback

  • In addition to assigning a numerical grade to a student’s submission, you can also provide feedback in the Comment box located at the bottom of the evaluation window. You can comment in two ways:
    • by recording a video (up to 15 minutes in length)
    • by typing comments in the text box.

  • You can also add time-stamped comments referring to specific points in the video. To do that, simply play the submitted video, pause at a point where you would like to add a comment, and type your comment in the text box. The comment will then appear at specific point in the video.

  • When finished, you can:
    • click Save and Publish if you want to publish the grade so that the student(s) can see it right away, or
    • click Save as Draft to save the grade for now but publish later (e.g., when all students’ submissions have been graded).

NOTE: You cannot release feedback without a grade.
