Dr. Max Liboiron
Chair in Teaching and Learning, Faculty of Arts
As the Chair in Teaching and Learning for the Faculty of Arts, Dr. Max Liboiron is leading initiatives that can impact the entire range of departments within Arts, as well as the university as a whole. One focus is on the academic and social experiences of Aboriginal students. To date, Dr. Liboiron has worked with the Centre for Institutional Analysis and Planning (CIAP), Catharyn Andersen (Special Advisor to the President on Aboriginal Affair), and the register’s office to create a system where all Aboriginal students can self-declare during admissions intake so that MUN can collect information for a long-term project to understand trends in admissions, retention, and disciplinary homes of Aboriginal students in order to serve them better. Dr. Liboiron has also invited Richard Chavolla, expert in domestic diversity in higher education, to give workshops and public talks on Inclusive Excellence at MUN.
Dr. Liboiron’s other projects as Chair support resource sharing across departments. This work includes creating a teaching resources wiki developed with DELTS that contains assignments, readings, and other resources professors have found useful for student-centered learning, and a financially supported Radical Pedagogy Group that does research and writing on pedagogical practices at MUN.
Dr. Liboiron’s teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of fostering critical thinking skills in students through practice-based learning so they can become educated citizens with a capacity for social justice. She believes that developing concrete skills grounded in humanities and social sciences allows students to rethink assumptions, articulate problems in terms of wider systems and effects, and forge collaborative relationships for knowledge application.
Dr. Liboiron is a scholar and activist. Her academic work focuses on how invisible, harmful, emerging phenomena such as “slow” disasters and toxicants from plastics become apparent in science and activism, and how these methods of representation relate to action. She has taught in a range of disciplines, including sociology, communications and media studies, environmental studies, and studio art.
