Top Hat


If your course instructor has notified you that you will be using Top Hat in class, the following guide will give you a brief introduction to its features.

Create an account

  1. In order to use Top Hat, you will need a subscription. You should speak with your instructor about the best subscription for your needs
  2. Navigate to the Top Hat website: https://app-ca.tophat.com/register/student/
  3. Select Memorial University of Newfoundland as your schoolMemorial
  4. Enter your name and email address.
  5. Choose a username and password. Check the box to agree with Top Hat’s terms and conditions
  6. Enter your 9 digit student number. Enter your student ID number.
  7. Enter your mobile phone number. This will link your Top Hat account to your phone allowing you to submit answers to Top Hat via text messages. If you will be participating with another device simply click “Skip, I don’t want to use my phone.”Add your phone number or press Skip.
  8. Choose your course from the available list and click Enroll.
  9. Now that your account is created, you can access Top Hat by visiting tophat.com/login

Using Top Hat

Laptops and personal computers
While you can submit your Top Hat answers via any web browser, it is highly recommended that you use Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Apple Safari to avoid known compatibility issues with Internet Explorer.

Mobile device apps
The Top Hat app can be downloaded from either the App Store or Google Play Store. The app can only be used to answer active questions. In order to answer homework questions or view the gradebook, you must use an Internet browser.

Mobile device SMS
If you have connected your mobile device, you can submit in-class answers by sending an SMS message to your course’s texting number. The number is displayed on the right side of your screen, below your instructor’s in-class questions. Each question will be assigned a unique 4 digit ID number. For example: if your answer is “A” to the question with an ID number “4500” then you should text “4500 A” to your course’s number.
