However, we know that when learners participate in class, they tend to retain the information and better understand the topic. The following provides just a very small sample of the multitude of activities that can complement lectures.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Activities<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Self-created, short instructional video<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many software options are available<\/li>\n<li>Can focus on a single topic<\/li>\n<li>Great for demonstrations<\/li>\n<li>Learners can watch on their schedule<\/li>\n<li>Repeated views are possible<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/instructionalresources\/files\/2020\/05\/Webcam-Recording-Tips.pdf\" data-type=\"attachment\" data-id=\"8047\">Webcam Recording Tips<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Practice before you do your recording<\/li>\n<li>Record is good lighting and remove any distracting visuals from the background<\/li>\n<li>See&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/technologyresources\/lecture-recording-options\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-recording lectures<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Self-created audio<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Built-in audio recorders are readily available<\/li>\n<li>Files are generally small<\/li>\n<li>Can embed audio clips into a content page that includes visuals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prepare yourself to avoid rambling<\/li>\n<li>Be concise and focused<\/li>\n<li>Check for background noise<\/li>\n<li>Practice with the technology<\/li>\n<li>Pause after you hit record before you start to speak. Similarly, pause after you finish speaking before you hit stop. It helps keep both learners and instructors informed of issues, progress, triumphs, challenges, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Can delve deep into a topic. It has nine components.\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>affirm: \u201cI like this part\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>piggyback: add to the info provided;<\/li>\n<li>disagree: with the reason why;<\/li>\n<li>clarify: ask questions;<\/li>\n<li>followup: \u201cthis source claims this\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>encourage participation: \u201cBetty we haven\u2019t heard from you, what do you think about\u2026\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>plan: \u201cwhat are the next steps?\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>summarize; and<\/li>\n<li>stay on task.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Can be synchronous or asynchronous.<\/li>\n<li>Check in with groups regularly to see that they are on target and on task.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Review Activities<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Having learners active in their review gives them the opportunity to determine how much they know and understand in a no stakes environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle wp-block-ub-content-toggle-block\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-block-8b4845c7-e3ef-4d36-9498-7e8d7d8cb592\" data-mobilecollapse=\"false\" data-desktopcollapse=\"true\" data-preventcollapse=\"false\" data-showonlyone=\"true\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion\" style=\"border-color: #f1f1f1;
