The results of our assessment influence our students for the rest of their lives and careers \u2014 fine if we get it right, but unthinkable if we get it wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite><em>(Race, Brown, &amp; Smith, 2005, p. xi)<\/em><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The following information provides ways of assessing learners within the Brightspace environment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assessment Types<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Class Participation<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Participation in class discussion helps the learner to reflect on the topic, to think how it applies to them, and helps them to internalize content.<\/li>\n<li>Discussions enable learners to express their thoughts on a topic.<\/li>\n<li>Discussions encourage learners to keep up with the class schedule.<\/li>\n<li>Discussions enable the instructor to see who is understanding the material and who may be struggling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><section class='notebox tipbox'><aside><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The discussion questions should be ones where students can present their different perspectives. These take time to prepare.<\/li>\n<li>Moderating the discussion is important.<\/li>\n<li>It works best if you have small group-based discussions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/aside><\/section><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Questions and Quizzes (using the Brightspace Quizzes Tool)<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enables easy grading of quizzes.<\/li>\n<li>Can provide a large variety of question types.<\/li>\n<li>Can provide automatic feedback.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><section class='notebox tipbox'><aside><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Works best if you create a question pool in the question library. Since the tweets are short, they can be quick to read.<\/li>\n<li>Great for courses that are discussing current events.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><section class='notebox tipbox'><aside><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Suggest students create an account for academic use.<\/li>\n<li>Ask students to use a specific #hashtag.<\/li>\n<li>Have them practice microblogging early in the semester to get the hang of it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/aside><\/section><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Video<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Great way to show things that may be difficult to do via text; e.g., interviews, hands on activities.<\/li>\n<li>Easy to grade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><section class='notebox tipbox'><aside><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Video Assignments tool may be used for submitting videos, since it allows users to record videos using the tool interface.<\/li>\n<li>Learners can use the camera that comes built-in with most computers, tablets, and smartphones.<\/li>\n<li>If using Brightspace, file sizes need to be small, &lt;1GB; therefore, encourage learners to keep the videos short.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/aside><\/section><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Audio<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A great method of assessing learner knowledge of a topic without having learners submit written work.<\/li>\n<li>Easy to grade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><section class='notebox tipbox'><aside><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Assignments tool may be used for submitting audio files, since it allows users to record audio using the tool interface.<\/li>\n<li>Learners can use the microphone that comes built-in with most computers, tablets, and smartphones.<\/li>\n<li>The file size needs to be &lt;1GB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/aside><\/section><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ePortfolio<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Learners can create over time and can include a variety of artifacts to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and understanding.<\/li>\n<li>Easy to set up.<\/li>\n<li>Fairly easy to grade, especially if there is a rubric in place.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><section class='notebox tipbox'><aside><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The ePortfolio site at Memorial is <a href=\"https:\/\/eportfolio.mun.ca\/\">eportfolio.mun.ca<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>ePortfolios can be time consuming to create.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage learners to focus on the learning evidence rather than the \u2018showcase\u2019 aspect of an ePortfolio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/aside><\/section><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Projects<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Can create options for learners.<\/li>\n<li>Easy to set up.<\/li>\n<li>Fairly easy to grade, especially if there is a rubric in place.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><section class='notebox tipbox'><aside><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Think outside the box. Be creative, allow learners to be creative as they demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and attitudes.<\/li>\n<li>Use a staged approach to assessment as a way to provide feedback to students work as their project evolves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/aside><\/section><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peer Review<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Learners review each others work, enabling them to learn from one another.<\/li>\n<li>Learners develop critical thinking skills.<\/li>\n<li>Instructors have a more polished product to read, review, thus grading is faster.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><section class='notebox tipbox'><aside><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Initially some learners will need to be encouraged to work beyond the grammar stage.
