for Detecting and Reporting Unauthorized use of GenAI in Student Work\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This resource provides guidance around the procedures and responsibilities for instructors&nbsp;in\u202fidentifying\u202fand addressing potential AI-related academic offences, in alignment with Memorial\u2019s broader Academic Misconduct Regulations.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is unauthorized use?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>Unauthorized use is any use of&nbsp;GenAI&nbsp;that does not align with the expectations&nbsp;an instructor&nbsp;establishes&nbsp;in their&nbsp;course, specific&nbsp;assessment&nbsp;and\/or course activity.&nbsp;It is&nbsp;the&nbsp;responsibility&nbsp;of the instructor to&nbsp;clarify&nbsp;these&nbsp;expectations in&nbsp;the&nbsp;course&nbsp;syllabus and&nbsp;in other relevant&nbsp;instructions&nbsp;they provide.&nbsp;These expectations should also make transparent&nbsp;approaches&nbsp;that are&nbsp;considered&nbsp;for&nbsp;detecting&nbsp;unauthorized use&nbsp;(i.e.&nbsp;use of detection tools).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clarity in Course Expectations:\u202f&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Communicate clearly in your syllabi\u202f(see\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mun.ca\/university-calendar\/university-regulations-undergraduate\/6\/7\/#6.7.2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6.7.2 Course Syllabus<\/a>\u202fand\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/instructionalresources\/generative-artificial-intelligence-syllabus-statements\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"15035\">Generative Artificial Intelligence Syllabus Statements<\/a>), assignment descriptions, or class discussions.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Indicate whether AI tools are\u202fpermitted\u202for prohibited.&nbsp;If\u202fpermitted, note&nbsp;the extent of acceptable use (e.g.,\u202fidea generation vs. content creation).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Share resources on how to properly cite AI-generated content, with recommended formats (e.g.,&nbsp;\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.mun.ca\/researchtools\/guides\/integrity\/ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI: Citation, attribution, acknowledgement<\/a>).\u202f&nbsp;<br>\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transparency in Detection Methods:\u202f&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As per&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mun.ca\/senate\/media\/production\/memorial\/administrative\/senate\/media-library\/reports\/Statement%20on%20Generative%20AI.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Memorial\u2019s Statement on Generative AI<\/a>, the use of&nbsp;GenAI&nbsp;detection tools\u202fis not recommended.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>If you choose to use AI-detection software to&nbsp;identify&nbsp;suspected inappropriate use, students must be informed about its use&nbsp;and&nbsp;must be given the\u202fopportunity to opt out.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>The limitations of the tools should be acknowledged,&nbsp;as detectors are not\u202fconclusive\u202fevidence&nbsp;but\u202fcan support a broader investigation.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Any\u202fsuch\u202fuse must be\u202fconsistent with\u202fother university policies\u202f(e.g.,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mun.ca\/policy\/browse-or-search\/browse-policies\/university-policy\/?policy=228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Privacy<\/a>\u202fand\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mun.ca\/policy\/browse-or-search\/browse-policies\/university-policy\/?policy=801\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Electronic Data Security<\/a>), which do not\u202fpermit\u202fsharing student information with unauthorized outside agencies.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><section report of academic misconduct, instructors\u202fshould\u202freview the&nbsp;appropriate official&nbsp;procedure:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For&nbsp;Undergraduate&nbsp;students:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mun.ca\/university-calendar\/university-regulations-undergraduate\/6\/12\/#6.12.3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6.12.3 General Procedure<\/a>\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>For&nbsp;Graduate&nbsp;Students:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mun.ca\/university-calendar\/school-of-graduate-studies\/school-of-graduate-studies\/4\/12\/#4.12.3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4.12.3 General Procedure<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><section class='notebox'><aside><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the case of minor offences, there should be an attempt to\u202fresolve the allegations\u202fat the instructor level.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/aside><\/section><\/p>\n<p>Once sufficient evidence is gathered&nbsp;and&nbsp;an\u202finitial\u202fdiscussion with the student has taken place&nbsp;(if applicable), you may choose to bring forward a case for adjudication.&nbsp;The adjudication process will be consistent with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mun.ca\/regoff\/calendar\/sectionNo=REGS-0748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Memorial University Academic Misconduct Procedures<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Evidence of AI Use\u202f&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>As part&nbsp;of the reporting process,&nbsp;instructors&nbsp;will need to provide&nbsp;strong&nbsp;evidence&nbsp;to support\u202fa report&nbsp;of academic misconduct.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of the strongest forms of evidence of unauthorized AI use would be the student&#8217;s inability to explain or reproduce&nbsp;submitted&nbsp;works upon request.
