{"id":22559,"date":"2026-01-28T12:04:16","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T15:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/instructionalresources\/?p=22559"},"modified":"2026-01-28T12:04:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T15:34:20","slug":"academic-integrity-and-generative-artificial-intelligence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/instructionalresources\/academic-integrity-and-generative-artificial-intelligence\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic Integrity and\u00a0Generative Artificial Intelligence\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Academic integrity and the ethics&nbsp;of&nbsp;use&nbsp;continue&nbsp;to be at the forefront of&nbsp;Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI)&nbsp;conversations in higher education.&nbsp;While some proponents feel the technology has presented opportunities for equity across diverse student populations, others feel&nbsp;the&nbsp;use&nbsp;of such tools&nbsp;contributes&nbsp;to an erosion in how&nbsp;students&nbsp;demonstrate&nbsp;learning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mun.ca\/senate\/media\/production\/memorial\/administrative\/senate\/media-library\/reports\/Statement%20on%20Generative%20AI.pdf\">Memorial\u2019s statement<\/a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;GAI use clearly&nbsp;indicates&nbsp;that faculty provide students clear guidelines around acceptable use of GAI in their courses.&nbsp;Expectations may vary from course to course, creating added confusion for students.&nbsp;Therefore,&nbsp;adding a clear statement&nbsp;in&nbsp;your syllabus, and drawing your students\u2019&nbsp;attention to&nbsp;it,&nbsp;is a proactive approach to mitigating inappropriate use.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some strategies to consider are:<\/h3>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Update your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/instructionalresources\/syllabus-element-details\/\">academic integrity statement on your syllabus<\/a>&nbsp;to explicitly include a reference to the use of any GAI in your course. You may choose to take a&nbsp;graduated&nbsp;approach or&nbsp;advise&nbsp;your students that it is not&nbsp;permitted&nbsp;at all. CITL has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/instructionalresources\/using-generative-artificial-intelligence-syllabus-statements\/\">drafted and curated some statements<\/a>&nbsp;for you to consider.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Talk to your students about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/instructionalresources\/academic-integrity\/\">academic integrity<\/a>&nbsp;and the ethics of using GAI tools. Have an open conversation so your students are clear on your expectations. You can emphasize that you understand why some students may find tools like this helpful to their&nbsp;learning but also&nbsp;highlight your concerns. Consider some of the points covered in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.citl.mun.ca\/instructionalresources\/talking-to-students-about-generative-artificial-intelligence-gai\/\">GAI Conversation Guide.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Direct your students to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.mun.ca\/researchtools\/guides\/integrity\/\">Library\u2019s Academic Integrity&nbsp;<\/a>resources, specifically the resource on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.mun.ca\/ai\">AI and your academic work.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>If you&nbsp;permit&nbsp;use, encourage your students to review the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/terms\/\">Terms of Use&nbsp;<\/a>of the tools before doing so.&nbsp;Specifically,&nbsp;direct them to sections&nbsp;about&nbsp;the use&nbsp;of content&nbsp;shared in the application&nbsp;and confidentiality.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional&nbsp;considerations&nbsp;to help&nbsp;prevent misuse of GAI tools.&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Allow for sufficient time between assignments. Students may look for shortcuts like&nbsp;using&nbsp;GAI when faced with time pressure from tight deadlines.<\/li>\n<li>Help your students understand the value of their learning and the importance of academic integrity in terms of their intellectual and professional growth.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage your students to&nbsp;use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mun.ca\/citl\/student-learning-solutions\/writing-services\/\">Writing Services<\/a>&nbsp;to help them through the writing process.&nbsp;Peer tutors help students learn skills such as&nbsp;writing&nbsp;better thesis statements, brainstorming, organizing ideas, and writing more concisely.
